Nationwide, ring tones are generating a projected $300 million in sales for 2004. Billboard magazine tracks the hottest: Currently No. 1 is "Drop It Like It's Hot," by Snoop Dogg.

"It's total customization and personalization," said Cindy Mesaros, whose company, Modtones, offers more than 3,000 ring tones to the cellular industry. "It's a lot of people in their teens and 20s who want people to know they're hip to the latest hip-hop song."
